Earthquake News- A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck western Turkey overnight between Monday and Tuesday, causing damage to buildings and spreading panic among residents. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported from this event.
The epicenter of the quake was near the city of Sindirgi in Balikesir province. It struck at 10:48 PM local time at a shallow depth of 6 kilometers, with several aftershocks being felt in major cities, including Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir.
Damage and Casualties
- Three empty residential buildings and a two-story shop collapsed in the Sindirgi area.
- Turkey’s Interior Minister stated that the buildings that collapsed had already been damaged and were vacant.
- The earthquake resulted in 22 people being injured.
Public Response and Ongoing Fear
The quake has left many residents too afraid to return to their homes. A significant number of people chose to spend the night outdoors, a situation complicated by rainfall that began in several affected cities.
In response, authorities have opened mosques, schools, and sports halls to provide shelter for those displaced.
A Region Prone to Seismic Activity
This event is a fresh reminder of Turkey’s high seismic risk, as it sits on major fault lines.
The region was already on edge after a 6.1 magnitude quake hit the same area in August, which killed one person and injured dozens.
The country is still recovering from the catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake in February 2023 that killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and left a lasting trauma across the nation.
