Oslo [Norway], October 10, 2025: Maria Corina Machado has been announced as the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering efforts to promote democratic rights in Venezuela and her commitment to achieving a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee hailed Machado as a “brave and committed champion of peace,” noting that she has kept “the flame of democracy burning amid growing darkness.” The committee emphasized the global significance of her work, stating that democracy is a precondition for lasting peace, particularly in a world where authoritarian regimes increasingly challenge democratic norms.
Machado has long fought for the freedom of the Venezuelan people, opposing the government’s strict control and repression. The Nobel Committee highlighted that her efforts align with Alfred Nobel’s criteria for the Peace Prize, noting:
- She has united the opposition in Venezuela.
- She has consistently resisted the militarization of society.
- She has promoted a peaceful transition to democracy.
“The tools of democracy are also the tools of peace,” the committee stated, adding that Machado represents hope for a future where citizens’ fundamental rights are protected and their voices are heard.
This announcement comes alongside the recent awarding of Nobel Prizes in chemistry, physics, medicine, and literature, with the economics prize scheduled to be revealed on Monday.
Machado’s recognition as the 2025 laureate underscores the international community’s support for democratic values and peaceful governance in Venezuela, highlighting the critical role of individual courage in confronting authoritarianism.
