MAXTON, N.C. (US) – A Halloween party in rural North Carolina turned deadly on Saturday night after a shooting broke out, leaving two people dead and several others injured. One of the deceased was a 16-year-old teenager.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Bernice Wilkins, reported that the incident occurred in Maxton, a town in southeastern North Carolina. Gunfire erupted at a party held in a home outside the town limits, leaving 13 people shot.

A Dispute Between Two Groups Turns Deadly

According to Sheriff Wilkins, the shooting resulted from a dispute between two groups attending the party. The event had drawn over 300 people, with attendees ranging in age from 16 to about 50 years old.

“It appears that there was an argument between two groups that escalated into gunfire from both sides,” authorities stated. This exchange of gunfire led to the two fatalities and multiple injuries.

Police Response and Aftermath

The second victim has been identified as 49-year-old Jesse Locklear Jr. As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. Police confirmed that multiple individuals at the party had fired weapons.

Reports indicate that police had received a complaint about loud music at the location around 1:15 a.m. Before officers could even arrive at the scene, they received reports of the active shooting. In the chaotic aftermath, over 150 people fled the scene.

Broader Context: America’s Gun Culture

This incident once again highlights the pervasive issue of gun violence in the United States. Fatal shootings are a daily occurrence, and while such violent events often spark renewed debate about the country’s gun culture, powerful pro-gun lobbies have historically made it difficult for the government to pass stringent firearm control laws.
