LONDON: UK police have launched a public appeal to identify a white suspect following a report that a 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in northern England due to her race. The woman is believed to be of Indian origin.
According to West Midlands Police, officers were called to a street in the Park Hall area of Walsall on Saturday evening after reports of a woman in distress. The police have released CCTV footage of a suspect and stated that the offence is being treated as a “racially aggravated assault.”
A “Truly Horrific” Attack
Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer, who is leading the investigation, said, “This was a truly horrific attack on a young woman. We are doing everything we can to identify the offender. Our team is gathering evidence and working to identify the suspect so he can be brought into custody.”
He appealed to the public for information, urging anyone who saw a suspicious person in the area or who has any CCTV footage to come forward.
Suspect Description and Community Impact
Police described the attacker as a white male, approximately 30 years old, with short hair, who was wearing all-black clothing at the time of the assault.
Local community groups have stated that the victim is a woman of Punjabi origin. This incident comes just weeks after a separate case in the nearby Oldbury area, where a British Sikh woman was also reportedly raped in a racially motivated attack.
DS Tyrer noted that, at this stage, the two cases are not being linked.
Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby of Walsall Police acknowledged the fear and concern within the community and assured that police presence in the area would be increased.
The Sikh Federation UK provided further details, stating that the victim from the Walsall attack is a Punjabi woman, and the suspect had broken her door to commit the crime.
