HERMOSILLO, Mexico – A powerful explosion and subsequent fire at a supermarket in the city of Hermosillo has resulted in the deaths of 23 people, including four children. The tragic incident occurred during the “Day of the Dead” festival, a national holiday in Mexico.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Governor of Sonora state expressed their condolences, with the governor ordering a full investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Key Details of the Incident

Location: A supermarket in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora state.

Timing: The incident took place during the “Day of the Dead” festival.

Casualties: 23 people killed, including 4 children. At least 10 others were injured.

Response: The Sonora Red Cross Society launched a rescue operation with 40 volunteers, police, and 10 ambulances to transport the injured to hospitals.

Cause of Death and the Fire

The State Attorney General, Gustavo Salas, confirmed that the fire has been extinguished. He explained that the victims died from smoke inhalation and poisonous gases produced by the fire, rather than from the flames themselves.

The fire was so intense that smoke rapidly filled the entire store. A glass enclosure and a single exit gate prevented the smoke from escaping, causing people to lose consciousness due to breathing difficulties before they could be rescued.

Investigation and Official Response

Authorities suspect the initial explosion and fire may have been caused by an electrical fault. The forensic team has collected evidence and is examining the bodies.

  • Governor’s Statement: Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo stated that the Hermosillo municipality has ruled out a terrorist attack. He has ordered an intensive investigation to determine the exact cause.
  • Presidential Condolences: President Claudia Sheinbaum posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) to express her grief over the tragedy.

The “Day of the Dead” is a major Mexican holiday where families honor and remember their deceased loved ones, often with processions and visits to gravesites.
