Mexico City – A video has gone viral on social media showing an unsettling incident involving Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, who was the target of an unsolicited advance while walking on a street in the capital.
The incident occurred as the President was walking and interacting with citizens in Mexico City. A man approached her on the roadside and suddenly attempted to kiss her on the cheek. Security personnel immediately intervened, grabbing the man and pulling him away from the President.
President Sheinbaum later confirmed that she has filed a formal complaint at a nearby police station regarding the incident. While the viral spread of the video has reportedly been curbed by authorities, copies continue to circulate online.
Sparking a National Debate on Women’s Safety
The event has ignited a fierce public debate in Mexico concerning the safety of women. Many citizens are expressing alarm, stating that if the country’s own President is not safe from such public harassment, then what security can ordinary women expect?
Public sentiment emphasizes that the individual responsible must face legal consequences and that men should be more respectful of personal boundaries.
President Sheinbaum Vows Not to Change Her Approach
In a strong statement following the incident, President Sheinbaum affirmed that she will not be intimidated. She clarified that she was walking from her official residence to the Education Ministry when the man, who appeared to be intoxicated, got too close and tried to kiss her.
She stated that she pushed him away herself before her security detail stepped in. Despite the unsettling event, Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, declared she will not alter her hands-on approach to leadership.
“I believe that to truly understand the problems of the people, one must be among them,” she said. “I will continue to be among the people. I will not be frightened by such acts, nor will I make any changes to my security protocol.”
