Washington, D.C. – A public rift is emerging between President Donald Trump and Zohran Mamdani, a newly elected mayor in the United States, highlighting the deep political divisions between their respective parties. The two have been frequently trading barbs, with the President now issuing a fresh warning to the new mayor.
The tension escalated when President Trump, in an interview with a news agency, criticized Mamdani’s victory speech, describing it as a “very angry speech.” He advised the new mayor to maintain a positive working relationship with the President.
Issuing a stark warning, Trump stated, “He should be very nice to me, because I’m the one that has to approve a lot of the things that he wants.” The President added, “So he got off to a bad start.”
This criticism refers to Mayor Mamdani’s direct challenge to Trump during his own victory address. Mamdani had declared, “To get to any of us, you will have to go through all of us. And I have four words for him: Turn. The. Mic. Up.” This defiant remark was widely seen as a signal of his intent to resist the President’s influence.
Despite the harsh words, President Trump struck a somewhat conciliatory note by expressing his desire for Mamdani to succeed, attributing it to his love for New York.
“I’m very conflicted because I want the new mayor to do well, because I love New York,” Trump said. “I love New York. I mean, I love New York. When I left New York and I went to Washington, New York was doing very well.”
The public spat underscores the challenges of federal-local cooperation in a politically polarized climate, setting the stage for potential conflicts over funding and policy approvals.
