A Turkish C-130 military cargo plane crashed on Tuesday near the Georgia-Azerbaijan border while en route from Azerbaijan to Turkey, prompting a joint search and rescue operation. Reports indicate that contact with the aircraft was lost just minutes after it entered Georgian airspace.
Official Confirmation and Response
The Turkish Ministry of Defense released a statement on its official X account, confirming, “Our C-130 military cargo plane, which had taken off from Azerbaijan to come to our country, crashed on the Georgia-Azerbaijan border. A search and rescue operation has been launched in coordination with Azerbaijani and Georgian authorities.”
Expressing his condolences to the victims’ families, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated in a release, “We are deeply shocked by the news of the crash of a Turkish Air Force military transport aircraft that took off from Ganja and crashed in Georgian territory, resulting in the loss of soldiers’ lives.”
He further said, “I extend my deepest condolences to the families and relatives of those who lost their lives. In this difficult time, I share your grief in connection with this tragic incident.”

Efforts to Reach the Wreckage
Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan confirmed the crash during an event in Ankara, stating that authorities are “trying to reach the wreckage in coordination with the relevant officials. May Allah have mercy on our martyrs.”
The number of fatalities has not yet been officially confirmed.
Loss of Contact
Citing a statement from the Georgian Air Navigation Authority, Turkiye Today reported that radar contact with the plane was lost just minutes after it entered Georgian airspace.
