Australia News- Dr. Jill Slay AM has been appointed as the Independent Reviewer of Australia’s primary legislation for protecting essential services, the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018 (SOCI Act).
The appointment is in line with Section 60A of the SOCI Act, which mandates an independent review of the legislation’s operation. This review will assess the Act in its current form, considering both immediate operational needs and its long-term strategic purpose.
Purpose of the Independent Review
- The central objective of the review is to evaluate whether the SOCI Act is:
- Operating as intended and achieving its stated objectives.
- Remains fit-for-purpose and is functioning effectively.
- Has resulted in any unintended consequences.
The review will also identify any necessary gaps or recommended amendments to the legislation. This work will provide a robust evidence base to guide future reforms and strengthen the protection of Australia’s critical infrastructure.
A Highly Qualified Reviewer
Dr. Slay brings a wealth of relevant experience to the role, having collaborated extensively with Commonwealth, state, and territory governments, as well as with industry and academic institutions.
Her current work at the University of South Australia focuses on satellite cybersecurity and resilience. Dr. Slay is nationally recognized for her pioneering research in digital forensics, cyber intelligence, and cyberwarfare. In recognition of her significant contributions, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her service in forensic computer science, security, infrastructure protection, and countering cyber-terrorism.
