Ukraine: Ukraine has taken a major step toward boosting its long-term defence capabilities, signing a letter of intent with France to purchase up to 100 Rafale fighter jets along with drones, air-defence systems and other advanced military equipment over the next decade.
The agreement was formalised on Monday in Paris, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the deal as a milestone in bilateral defence cooperation.
Calling it “a historic deal,” President Zelenskyy said the long-term plan includes the possible acquisition of 100 Rafale jets and eight SAMP/T air-defence systems equipped with six launchers each. He emphasised that the agreement provides Ukraine with a strategic, multi-year pathway to strengthen its air power and bolster national security starting next year.
President Macron described the signing as “a new step forward” in France-Ukraine relations, noting that the package covers next-generation fighter aircraft complete with armament, as well as provisions for training and future production cooperation.
The Rafale, France’s most advanced multi-role fighter jet, is known for its agility, cutting-edge systems and battlefield versatility. Used by the French military in operations across the Middle East and Africa, each aircraft is valued at more than $100 million.
The long-term procurement plan underscores Ukraine’s commitment to modernizing its armed forces as it continues to reinforce its defence posture amid ongoing security challenges.
