LA Port Fire- Massive Fire and Explosion Rock Container Ship at America’s Busiest Port in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, November 22, 2025 – BNN Web Staff

Panic gripped the Port of Los Angeles – North America’s busiest seaport – on Friday night when a massive container ship suddenly burst into flames, followed hours later by a powerful mid-deck explosion.

The 1,102-foot vessel, named MSC Henry Hudson (operated by Singapore-based ONE – Ocean Network Express), was docked at the port when fire broke out shortly before 7 p.m. local time. All 23 crew members were safely evacuated, authorities confirmed.

Fire Started in Electrical Section, Spread Rapidly
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the blaze originated in the ship’s below-deck electrical compartment and quickly spread upward through multiple levels. Several containers on board are known to contain hazardous materials, dramatically complicating firefighting efforts and raising fears of toxic smoke.

By late evening, flames had engulfed large sections of the ship. Around 10:30 p.m., a major explosion rocked the central deck, sending shockwaves across the terminal and forcing firefighters to temporarily retreat for safety.

Over 100 Firefighters Battle the Blaze

More than 100 LAFD firefighters, supported by harbour tugs spraying water from the sea and specialised hazardous materials teams, remain on scene. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated:

  • “Our hazmat teams are continuously monitoring air quality. The safety of residents, port workers, and first responders is our top priority.”

No injuries have been reported so far, and no significant air-quality threats have been detected beyond the immediate port area.

Investigation Underway

Preliminary assessments point to a possible electrical malfunction, but officials stressed that a full investigation – focusing on the ship’s electrical systems and the hazardous cargo containers – is ongoing. The exact cause of both the fire and the explosion remains unknown.

The MSC Henry Hudson had arrived in Los Angeles after stops in Kobe, Nagoya, and Tokyo, Japan. ONE (Ocean Network Express) has been contacted for comment but has not yet issued an official statement.

The Port of Los Angeles handles nearly 40% of all container traffic entering the United States. Operations in the affected terminal have been suspended, though the rest of the massive port complex continues to function.

Firefighting and damage-assessment operations are expected to continue through the weekend. Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by hazardous cargo at one of the world’s most critical trade gateways.
