Washington DC [US], December 23, 2025, BNN Web Staff: US President Donald Trump on Monday (local time) announced plans to introduce a new class of warships—dubbed the “Trump class” battleships—into what he described as the “Golden Fleet” of the United States Navy, marking a significant shift in the country’s naval modernisation strategy.

Calling the proposed vessels the largest battleships ever built, Trump said the US aims to construct between 20 and 25 such ships.

He claimed the new fleet would deliver vastly superior strength compared to existing US naval assets, addressing what he termed an urgent need to replace ageing and outdated vessels.

Speaking as Commander-in-Chief, Trump said he had approved the Navy’s plan to begin construction of the new battleships, adding that the concept had been under consideration since his first presidential term. He described the ships as unmatched globally in size, speed, and combat capability.

According to Trump, the battleships—each weighing between 30,000 and 40,000 tonnes—will be among the most lethal surface warships ever deployed. They are expected to be equipped with missiles, heavy guns, advanced laser systems, and nuclear-capable weaponry.

He stressed that while missiles remain central to modern warfare, conventional naval guns continue to offer cost-effective combat solutions.
Highlighting the decline in US battleship construction, Trump noted that the country has not built a battleship since 1994, contrasting this with the mass shipbuilding efforts seen during World War II.

He said the initial phase would begin with two ships, with gradual expansion to a full fleet of up to 25 vessels.

Trump further stated that once completed, the new ships would serve as flagships of the American naval force. He added that US naval shipyards, in partnership with private operators, would be involved in the construction process.

The President also revealed that the vessels would feature advanced artificial intelligence systems and cutting-edge weapons, including cruise missiles currently under development.

The announcement comes amid heightened maritime security activity by the United States. Earlier this month, US authorities seized two tankers near Venezuela, and on Sunday began pursuing a so-called “dark fleet” vessel in international waters after it failed to comply with boarding instructions, according to media reports.

The ship, identified as Bella 1, was allegedly en route to Venezuela to load oil.
