Speaking to reporters, Trump referred to a brief four-day military confrontation following India’s Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead.
Washington DC [US], December 23, 2025, BNN Web Staff: United States President Donald Trump on Monday (local time) once again asserted that his intervention prevented a full-scale conflict between India and Pakistan, claiming his actions helped avert what he described as a potential nuclear war between the two neighbours.
Speaking to reporters, Trump referred to a brief four-day military confrontation following India’s Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead.
He alleged that eight aircraft were downed during the escalation and said the situation was rapidly spiralling before his involvement.
Trump stated that he had resolved multiple global conflicts, adding that tensions between India and Pakistan were defused after his intervention.
He claimed that Pakistan’s Prime Minister had credited him with saving millions of lives. Trump further remarked that while several disputes had been “settled,” the Russia-Ukraine war remained unresolved.
The US President has repeatedly maintained that the threat of trade tariffs played a key role in de-escalating the India-Pakistan situation, asserting that the standoff ended within 24 hours of his involvement. However, India has firmly rejected these claims.
New Delhi has consistently maintained that after sustaining significant damage, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations contacted his Indian counterpart, following which both sides mutually agreed to halt all military actions across land, air, and sea with effect from May 10.
Responding to a separate question on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump acknowledged ongoing diplomatic efforts but noted deep hostility between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Recent peace discussions between the United States and Russia concluded in Miami, Florida. Following the talks, Trump’s foreign envoy, Steve Witkoff, said Russia had expressed strong commitment towards achieving peace in Ukraine.
He said meetings between Russian Special Envoy Kirill Dmitriev and senior US officials were constructive and aimed at advancing Trump’s proposed peace framework.
According to Witkoff, the American delegation included himself, Jared Kushner, and White House staff member Josh Gruenbaum. Russian officials reportedly appreciated US efforts to stabilise the situation and restore global security.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged Washington to intensify pressure on Moscow. Ukrainian officials also held discussions with US and European counterparts on the sidelines of the Miami talks.
Steve Witkoff and Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umerov described the engagements as productive, noting progress on aligning positions related to President Trump’s proposed 20-point peace plan, including discussions on multilateral and US-backed security guarantees for Ukraine.
