Four Killed in Arizona Helicopter Crash After Striking Recreational Slackline
Arizona, January 3, 2026 (BNN Web Staff)-
A private helicopter crashed in the rugged mountains of central Arizona on Friday, January 2, 2026, killing all four people on board, including a pilot and three young family members. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. local time near Telegraph Canyon, south of the town of Superior in Pinal County, approximately 64 miles (103 km) east of Phoenix.
Details of the Crash
The helicopter, an MD 369FF model, had departed from Pegasus Airpark in Queen Creek, Arizona.
Victims: A 59-year-old male pilot from Queen Creek and three female passengers—his family members—aged 22, 21, and 21.
Preliminary reports indicate the aircraft struck a recreational slackline (a long, high-tension rope used for highlining) stretched more than half a mile (over one kilometer) across the mountain range.
An eyewitness who called 911 reported seeing the helicopter hit part of the line before plummeting to the bottom of the canyon.
Due to the remote and challenging terrain, search and rescue teams—including Pinal County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Superior Fire, Queen Valley Fire, and BORSTAR—reached the wreckage on foot alongside Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigators, confirming the fatalities later that evening.
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences: “Our prayers are with the victims and their families.”
Investigation and Safety Measures
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are leading the investigation into the cause.
A temporary flight restriction was imposed over the area for safety reasons.
Telegraph Canyon is a popular but hazardous spot for outdoor recreation, known for its steep terrain that can pose risks to low-flying aircraft. Authorities have not yet commented on whether the slackline’s installation violated any regulations or if enforcement actions will follow.
This tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about aviation safety in recreational areas with unmarked hazards like highlines. The victims’ names have not been released pending full notification of next of kin.
