Beijing / Caracas, January 4, 2026, BNN Web Staff: China has strongly criticized the United States for the detention and removal of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, describing the action as a violation of international law and fundamental principles of global diplomacy.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the US operation on January 3 “contradicts the purposes and principles of the UN Charter” and called on Washington to ensure the personal safety of Maduro and his wife.

China urged the United States to release them immediately, refrain from interfering in Venezuela’s internal affairs, and resolve disputes through dialogue and negotiation.

The condemnation follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a “large-scale strike” against Venezuela, claiming that Maduro and his spouse were captured and removed from the country. A photograph posted by Trump on social media showed Maduro aboard the USS Iwo Jima after his detention. Video footage released by US authorities depicted Maduro in handcuffs during a staged perp walk, where he was seen greeting DEA officials and reporters.

The US action has sparked international concern. Several nations have expressed disapproval of the intervention, highlighting potential threats to regional stability. The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized that such unilateral use of force undermines Venezuela’s sovereignty and poses risks to peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, in Caracas, Venezuela’s Supreme Court ordered Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to assume the role of acting president, citing Maduro’s “material and temporary inability to perform presidential duties.” Rodriguez is now tasked with exercising all presidential powers to maintain administrative continuity and safeguard the nation, according to the court ruling broadcast on state television.

Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton revealed that a plan to remove Maduro had been proposed to Trump during his first term but did not progress due to lack of sustained focus. Trump later executed what he described as a “large-scale strike” against Venezuela without seeking congressional approval.

China’s statement reiterates its firm opposition to actions that violate international law and called on the US to respect the sovereignty and security of other nations.
