Madrid, Spain — January 7, 2026, BNN Web Staff: Spain has reaffirmed its strong support for Denmark and the people of Greenland, emphasizing that respect for national sovereignty is fundamental to maintaining international peace, amid renewed statements from the United States regarding the possible acquisition of the Arctic territory.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Spain stands firmly with Denmark and Greenland, alongside several major European nations. He stressed that the principle of sovereignty must not be undermined, noting that the lessons of the 20th century clearly demonstrated the dangers of disregarding territorial integrity.

Spain’s position was echoed in a joint statement by NATO allies, including France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom and Denmark, underscoring unity on the issue of Arctic security. The leaders highlighted that the Arctic has become a strategically significant region for both European and transatlantic security.

The statement followed comments from the White House indicating that Washington is exploring multiple avenues to acquire Greenland, with U.S. officials describing the territory as a key national security interest. The remarks have raised concerns across Europe, particularly given Greenland’s strategic location and its status as part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

European leaders reiterated that Greenland is an integral part of Denmark and NATO, and that its future can only be decided by Denmark and the people of Greenland themselves. They also emphasized that Arctic security must be addressed collectively within NATO, in line with international law.

The joint declaration further noted that European allies have increased their military presence, investments and strategic activities in the Arctic to deter potential threats, while remaining committed to cooperation with the United States as a core NATO partner.

At the same time, the leaders stressed that such cooperation must be rooted in mutual respect for international norms, including the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders as outlined in the United Nations Charter.

The developments highlight growing geopolitical sensitivity around the Arctic, as global powers increasingly focus on the region’s strategic, economic and security significance.
