America- A series of shootings in a rural Mississippi county late Friday left six people dead, including a young child, in what authorities describe as a multi-location attack carried out by a single suspect now in custody.
The violent incidents occurred across three separate locations in Clay County, located in the northeastern part of the state. Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott identified the suspect as 24-year-old Derica M. Moore.
Details of the Attack:
The victims include four individuals who were reportedly acquainted with the suspect. Among the deceased is a 7-year-old boy, who is believed to be the shooter’s cousin. Sheriff Scott expressed horror at the child’s killing, stating he did not know what motive could exist for such an act. He described a chilling detail, noting the suspect “held a gun to a small child’s head.”
“Four of the victims were related to the suspect,” Scott said, confirming the personal connections. “We will find out the reasons for this soon.”
Investigation and Response:
The shootings prompted a significant law enforcement response. Sheriff Scott announced via social media that a suspect was in custody and that “there is no further threat to the public.” While his initial post did not specify the death toll, local news station WTVA and subsequent official confirmations reported six fatalities.
Authorities are currently investigating the motives behind the shootings that targeted the victims at different sites. Sheriff Scott and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department are leading the probe.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Sheriff Scott requested prayers for the victims and their grieving families. “I ask that you pray for all of our victims and their families,” he wrote.
