Tehran (Iran), March 22, 2026 — Iran’s ongoing internet blackout has stretched into its fourth consecutive week, surpassing 500 hours of severely restricted connectivity, as authorities maintain tight control over communications amid escalating tensions involving the United States and Israel.
The prolonged disruption has sharply limited both domestic and international communication, intensifying concerns over access to information and the broader humanitarian impact. Digital rights observers warn that the blackout is isolating millions of citizens at a time when reliable communication is critical.
According to NetBlocks, international internet access in Iran remains largely cut off, while domestic networks continue to function under heavy restrictions. The organisation reported that authorities have also cracked down on alternative access methods, including VPNs and satellite connections, leaving users with few dependable ways to stay connected.
Highlighting the human toll, NetBlocks emphasised that the disruption is preventing families from communicating during a period of heightened uncertainty. The group noted that in times of conflict, access to communication is essential not only for safety but also for emotional support and coordination.
Residents inside the country have described worsening conditions. In conversations with Al Jazeera, several individuals reported extreme difficulty in contacting relatives abroad.
Many said that even basic online services are either unavailable or functioning sporadically, making it nearly impossible to send messages, access news updates, or use social media platforms.
The blackout comes against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions in the region, with no visible signs of de-escalation. Despite growing international criticism, Iranian authorities have not provided any clear timeline for restoring full internet access.
As uncertainty continues, the extended shutdown is emerging as one of the most severe digital blackouts in recent years, drawing sharp criticism from global watchdogs and amplifying calls for immediate restoration of connectivity.
