Washington D.C (US), April 24, 2026, BNN Web Staff — The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been extended by an additional three weeks following high-level discussions facilitated by the United States, President Donald Trump announced on Thursday.

Addressing reporters at the White House, Trump said that senior officials from both nations had agreed to continue the cessation of hostilities, describing the talks as “productive” and expressing hope that the truce would hold.

He also indicated that leadership-level meetings involving Lebanon’s president and Israel’s prime minister could take place in Washington in the coming weeks.

Trump acknowledged that while the ceasefire extension is a positive development, concerns remain regarding the role of Hezbollah, which continues to be a key factor in regional tensions.

In a separate statement, Trump said the US would work closely with Lebanon to strengthen its security framework and help it counter threats posed by Hezbollah.

He described the discussions as a “historic step” towards stabilising the region.

US Vice President JD Vance termed the extension a “major moment,” crediting Trump’s direct involvement for securing the agreement.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed similar sentiments, stating that the move provides crucial time to push for a more permanent peace arrangement.

Officials expressed cautious optimism that continued diplomatic engagement could bring both nations closer to long-term stability, though challenges on the ground persist.
