New York (US), June 9, 2026, BNN Web Staff: US President Donald Trump has said that Israel and Iran have agreed to temporarily refrain from further military action, expressing confidence that ongoing negotiations with Tehran could soon lead to a breakthrough on a nuclear agreement.

Speaking to reporters after attending the NBA Finals in New York, Trump indicated that diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran were progressing positively and that greater clarity on the outcome of the talks could emerge within the next few days.

The US President maintained that restrictions on maritime traffic through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz would remain in place until a final agreement is reached with Iran. He asserted that economic pressure on Tehran would continue until a deal preventing the development of nuclear weapons is formally concluded.

Trump suggested that the Strait of Hormuz could reopen immediately after the signing of an agreement, which he said might happen within days. According to him, the ongoing negotiations are focused on ensuring that Iran is prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons under any circumstances.

Commenting on recent tensions between Israel and Iran, Trump revealed that he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and claimed that both sides had agreed to avoid further escalation for the time being.

Referring to the recent exchange of attacks between the two countries, Trump said Israel had responded after being targeted and suggested that both nations had now decided to halt retaliatory actions. He stated that Israel and Iran had, through his mediation, agreed to “leave each other alone” for about a week while diplomatic efforts continue.

Trump also described his conversation with Netanyahu as productive and expressed optimism that both Israel and Iran would show restraint as negotiations advance. He added that the prospects for a diplomatic resolution appeared encouraging and that a significant development could emerge in the near future.

The remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and growing international attention on efforts to revive diplomatic engagement with Iran while preventing further escalation in the Middle East.
