Trump Floats Idea of Renaming ICE to ‘NICE’, Invites Americans to Vote on Rebranding Proposal

Washington, D.C. (US), June 21, 2026, BNN Web Staff: US President Donald Trump has proposed a possible rebranding of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency,

suggesting it could be renamed “NICE” in an effort to reshape public perception of the agency and counter criticism surrounding immigration enforcement policies.

The proposal was shared by Trump on his social media platform, where he launched a public poll asking Americans to weigh in on the idea. According to the president, the additional “N” would stand for “National,” creating what he described as a more prestigious name for the agency.

In his post, Trump defended ICE officers, calling them dedicated patriots who carry out their duties under difficult conditions. He argued that the agency has faced years of negative coverage from sections of the media and political opponents, particularly over its role in enforcing immigration laws and deporting undocumented migrants.

Trump suggested that changing the agency’s name to “NICE” could alter the language used in media reports and public discussions about immigration enforcement. He remarked that phrases such as “NICE agents” or “NICE facilities” would sound significantly different from references to ICE, potentially influencing public perception of the agency’s work.

The president also revealed that he had discussed the idea with border security official Tom Homan. While Trump claimed the proposal had generated positive reactions among many supporters, he acknowledged that some ICE agents themselves were reportedly less enthusiastic about the suggested rebranding.

The comments come at a time when immigration remains one of the most divisive issues in American politics. In recent weeks, demonstrations and confrontations have taken place outside detention facilities, including the Delaney Hall migrant detention centre in Newark, where activists have protested federal immigration enforcement policies.

Reports from US media indicate that several arrests were made during protests outside the facility, with some activists linked to organisations advocating for the closure of detention centres and the abolition of ICE.

The debate also revives discussion about the agency’s history. Following the creation of the US Department of Homeland Security under the Homeland Security Act of 2002, the agency was initially known as the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The acronym “BICE” failed to gain widespread recognition, and the agency officially adopted the simpler “ICE” branding in 2007.

Trump’s latest proposal has already generated widespread discussion online, with supporters viewing it as a strategic communications move and critics dismissing it as a symbolic gesture that does little to address broader concerns surrounding immigration policy and border enforcement.
