Kyiv (Ukraine), September 6, 2026, BNN Web Staff: Ukraine is prepared to temporarily suspend strikes on Moscow as diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war continue, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy made the announcement following a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. He said Kyiv was ready to refrain from carrying out strikes on Moscow through the weekend and Monday, while expecting Moscow to take reciprocal steps.
The development comes as Witkoff and Kushner are scheduled to travel to Kyiv on Sunday after holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, according to reports.
Putin holds talks with US envoys
Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov described Putin’s meeting with the US representatives as constructive, candid and conducted in a trusting atmosphere. According to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency, the discussions lasted three hours and 10 minutes, including both formal talks and an informal dinner.
Ushakov said the discussions focused primarily on the Ukraine conflict. Putin reiterated Moscow’s readiness to work with Washington on political and diplomatic solutions, according to reports.
The Russian side also presented its assessment of developments on the battlefield and emphasised what it described as the need to address the “root causes” of the conflict.
The talks also covered economic cooperation and potential large-scale projects involving Russia and the United States, Ushakov said.
US envoys to carry Putin’s message to Kyiv
Ushakov said the Russian and US sides had agreed to continue direct contact between Putin and Trump, while maintaining communication through Witkoff and Kushner.
He added that the US envoys would convey to Ukrainian officials the views and assessments they had received from Putin regarding prospects for a lasting peace settlement.
The diplomatic activity follows a temporary pause ordered by Putin in Russian strikes on Kyiv. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had earlier said the three-day pause was linked to preparations for discussions with the US negotiators.
Peskov urged caution over speculation about possible peace proposals, saying the outcome of Putin’s discussions with the US representatives should be awaited.
The latest developments mark another round of high-level diplomatic engagement involving the United States, Russia and Ukraine as efforts continue to explore a possible path towards ending the conflict.
