After the Charger, Smartphone Companies May Now Remove the Cable from the Box
There was a time when a mobile phone’s box included earphones, a cable, and a charger. Gradually, companies first started removing earphones from the phone box, and then smartphone manufacturers stopped providing chargers with the phone. However, due to government policies in some countries, smartphone companies are still including chargers with the box. Now, reports are emerging that after the charger, smartphone companies are planning to remove the charging cable from the box.
USB Cable to be Excluded from the Box
Under the pretext of reducing their carbon footprint, smartphone companies have already stopped providing chargers with phones. Now, a report claims that companies are gradually planning to remove the USB cable from the phone box as well.
A user named Linus Tech Tips shared a post on the social media platform Reddit. They wrote that a few days ago, they purchased a Sony Xperia 10 VI smartphone. The box for this phone contained neither a charger nor a cable. The box only had the device and some basic documentation.
A Hint of Things to Come?
This could perhaps be a hint that in the future, smartphone companies may stop including cables in the phone box. It is also important to note that while Sony is a major company, its market share in the smartphone segment is not very large. Sony sells smartphones in only a few countries. It is possible that this could set a new trend for smartphone companies. In the coming years, smartphone manufacturers may remove cables from the phone box.
Apple Started the Trend
Apple started the trend of not including a charger with its smartphones. Subsequently, the company has also stopped providing USB cables with its latest iPad Air, AirPods 4, and AirPods Pro-3.
While this move is touted to help reduce electronic waste, in some cases it is actually exacerbating the e-waste problem. Many customers, while checking online ratings, end up buying third-party chargers or cables. Typically, the lifespan and quality of these accessories are not great. Compared to genuine items, they break down quickly and turn into e-waste.
