Washington DC [US], January 2, 2026, BNN Web Staff: Following a letter of support by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, eight lawmakers from the United States have urged the Government of India to ensure a fair and timely trial for Umar Khalid, who is facing charges in the North East Delhi riots conspiracy case.
The lawmakers, led by Democratic Congressman Jim McGovern—Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee and Co-chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission—addressed their concerns in a letter to India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra. McGovern represents Massachusetts’ 2nd Congressional District.
According to the letter, McGovern and his colleagues met Umar Khalid’s parents earlier in December. They expressed concern over Khalid’s prolonged detention without bail under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

He added that he, along with Congressman Jamie Raskin, is leading fellow lawmakers in appealing for Khalid’s release on bail and for judicial proceedings that align with international legal standards.
The lawmakers’ letter noted that independent human rights experts have raised questions about the prolonged use of UAPA, warning that it may conflict with global norms related to due process, equality before the law, and proportionality.
They urged Indian authorities to uphold the presumption of innocence and ensure trials are conducted within a reasonable timeframe.
The signatories also sought details on steps being taken to ensure that proceedings against Khalid and other accused persons meet international standards of justice.
Those who signed the letter include Congressman Jamie Raskin, Senator Chris Van Hollen, Senator Peter Welch, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, and Congressman Lloyd Doggett.
The development comes shortly after New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote a personal note expressing solidarity with Umar Khalid.
The message, shared on social media by Khalid’s partner Banojyotsna, recalled Mamdani’s meeting with Khalid’s parents and reflected on the importance of resilience and compassion. Mamdani was sworn in as New York Mayor earlier this week.
Recently, a Delhi court at Karkardooma granted Umar Khalid interim bail to attend his sister Ayesha Fatima Syeda’s wedding. He was released on provisional bail from December 16 to December 29, with the wedding held on December 27.
Umar Khalid has been charge-sheeted under the UAPA in connection with the Delhi riots conspiracy case. His bail petition is currently pending before the Supreme Court.
