LONDON – A man and a woman have been arrested in England in connection with the alleged rape of a Sikh woman in the West Midlands region last month. The incident, which occurred in the Oldbury area, is being treated as potentially racially motivated.
The arrests were made in Halesowen, within the same county, concerning the alleged rape of the woman. Subsequently, both suspects were also arrested in relation to the harassment of a 20-year-old British Sikh woman.
Details of the Alleged Assault
During the alleged sexual assault last month, the two white male attackers reportedly told the victim, ‘You don’t belong in this country, get out.’ The shocking nature of the crime sent waves of alarm through the Sikh community.
Community and Official Response
The case prompted a significant response from both community groups and authorities:
CrimeStoppers UK, a crime-fighting charity, announced a reward of £20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators of what it described as a racially motivated rape.
British Sikh organizations also united on social media, collectively offering an additional financial reward of £10,000 for any footage that could lead to the conviction of those responsible.
Condemnation in UK Parliament
The issue was raised in the UK Parliament, where Home Secretary Shabana Mahmoud condemned the attack.
“The horror of a sexual assault motivated by race or ethnicity is utterly condemnable,” she stated. “I am sure the whole House will join me in condemning these crimes in the strongest possible terms. This government will not tolerate any incitement of racial hatred or violence.”
