Australia Declares Bondi Beach Massacre Islamic State-Inspired Terror Attack as PM Confirms Ideology Link
Sydney, December 16, 2025 (BNN Web Staff) –
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that the deadly mass shooting at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, which claimed 15 lives during a Hanukkah celebration, was motivated by Islamic State (IS) ideology. The announcement came in a radio interview with ABC Sydney, where Albanese described the attack as “planned, targeted, and utterly barbaric.”
The attack unfolded on Sunday evening during “Chanukah by the Sea,” a public event marking the first night of Hanukkah attended by hundreds in the heart of Sydney’s Jewish community. Gunfire erupted from a pedestrian bridge, turning the festive gathering into chaos. Among the victims were a 10-year-old girl, a Holocaust survivor, and community leaders, with dozens more injured.
Suspects: Father-Son Duo with Prior Scrutiny
Police identified the attackers as Sajid Akram, 50, shot dead by officers at the scene, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, who was critically injured and remains in hospital under guard. Authorities believe the pair acted alone, using licensed firearms and improvised explosives found in their vehicle.
Two homemade Islamic State flags were recovered from the car, fueling confirmation of the ideological motive. Albanese noted: “This is an ideology that has persisted for over a decade, breeding hate and a mindset ready for mass murder.”
Naveed Akram had been investigated by Australia’s domestic intelligence agency (ASIO) in 2019 over ties to a Sydney-based IS-linked cell. Two associates were later jailed, but he was not deemed a significant threat at the time.
National Mourning and Response
Vigils and tributes have poured in across Sydney, with flowers, candles, and messages of solidarity blanketing Bondi Pavilion.
Albanese convened an emergency national cabinet meeting, vowing to tighten Australia’s already strict gun laws and combat rising antisemitism. “This act of pure evil has no place in our nation,” he said, rejecting links to foreign policy suggested by some international figures.
The attack marks Australia’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996 and its most lethal terrorist incident. Investigations continue, with heightened security at Jewish sites nationwide as the country grapples with shock and unity in mourning.
