California [US], October 8, 2025: In a historic move celebrating cultural diversity, California Governor Gavin Newsom has officially recognized Diwali as a state holiday by signing Assembly Bill 268 into law.
The new legislation allows community colleges and public schools across the state to close on Diwali. It also permits state employees, as well as eligible public school and college staff, to take paid time off to observe the festival. Educational institutions are further encouraged to hold activities that highlight the significance and values of Diwali.
Ajay Bhutoria, former advisor to President Joe Biden on the AANHPI Commission and a leading voice in the Indian American community, hailed the decision as a landmark moment for inclusivity in California.
“Thank you, Governor Newsom, for making Diwali a California state holiday,” Bhutoria said in a post on X. He also praised Assemblymembers Ash Kalra and Darshana Patel for championing the bill and leading it to completion.
Calling the move “a radiant milestone in California’s journey toward true inclusivity,” Bhutoria said the recognition honors the contributions of nearly one million South Asians living in the state. “Diwali embodies the victory of light over darkness and unity over division—a message that deeply resonates across our communities,” he added.
Bhutoria emphasized that this step is not just symbolic but a meaningful acknowledgment of the Indian diaspora’s role in California’s progress—from innovators in Silicon Valley to healthcare professionals in the south. He noted that the law enables families to celebrate Diwali traditions like lighting diyas and creating rangolis without work-related constraints.
Expressing gratitude to the state leadership, Bhutoria said, “This moment kindles pride, belonging, and harmony for all Californians. Shubh Deepavali—may the lamps of progress continue to glow.”
