California (US), May 12, 2026. BNN Web Staff: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced federal charges against Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang, accusing her of acting as an unregistered agent for the People’s Republic of China in coordination with a co-accused individual.

According to the FBI and prosecutors, Wang and Yaoning “Mike” Sun allegedly operated under the direction of Chinese government-linked officials between late 2020 and 2022.

Authorities claim they worked with individuals based in the United States to advance Beijing’s interests through coordinated media influence activities.

Investigators said the pair allegedly used a platform called “US News Center,” which presented itself as a local Chinese-American news outlet. The website is accused of publishing content aligned with pro-China narratives after receiving instructions and pre-written material from officials connected to the Chinese government.

Federal prosecutors stated that Wang has agreed to plead guilty to a felony charge related to acting on behalf of a foreign government without proper disclosure. The charge carries a maximum possible sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

The Department of Justice said Wang is expected to appear in a Los Angeles federal court for her initial hearing, with a formal guilty plea anticipated in the coming weeks.

Authorities also noted that Wang was elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022, where she later served as mayor through a rotating leadership system among council members in the five-person governing body.

Prosecutors highlighted an instance in June 2021, alleging that a Chinese government-linked official contacted Wang and associates through the WeChat messaging platform and provided pre-prepared news content intended for publication.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg described the allegations as serious concerns involving alleged covert foreign influence in US civic institutions.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli for the Central District of California said individuals who secretly act under foreign direction “undermine democratic systems,” adding that enforcement actions aim to protect national institutions from external interference.

Roman Rozhavsky, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, said the case demonstrates that individuals allegedly working on behalf of foreign governments will be investigated and held accountable.

FBI Director Kash Patel also stated in a post on social media platform X that federal agencies are continuing efforts to identify and counter foreign influence operations targeting US institutions.

Following the allegations, city records indicate that Eileen Wang has resigned from the Arcadia City Council, effectively vacating her role as mayor.
