Beijing [China], January 14, 2026, BNN Web Staff: China on Wednesday reiterated its support for Iran’s efforts to maintain internal stability, while strongly criticising unilateral sanctions and tariff measures imposed by the United States, underscoring Beijing’s opposition to interference in the domestic affairs of sovereign nations.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China consistently stands against the use or threat of force in international relations and rejects external meddling in the internal matters of other countries.
His remarks came in response to questions on the evolving situation in Iran and fresh sanctions announced by US President Donald Trump against countries conducting business with Tehran.
Commenting on the tariff issue, Lin said China’s position remains unchanged, stressing that trade wars serve no one’s interests. He added that Beijing would take all necessary steps to safeguard its legitimate and lawful rights and interests in the face of external economic pressure.
In a post on social media platform X, the spokesperson stated that China hopes Iran will preserve stability and reaffirmed Beijing’s support in this regard. He reiterated that China opposes any form of interference in other countries’ internal affairs, as well as the use or threat of force in global politics.
The comments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. Iran has recently approached the United Nations Security Council and the UN Secretary-General, accusing the United States of encouraging unrest, interfering in Iran’s domestic affairs and issuing threats of military action, according to an official letter circulated by Iran’s Permanent Mission to the UN.
In the letter, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani, expressed serious concern over recent remarks by the US President related to protests inside Iran.
Tehran claims the statements promoted unrest and implied external backing for efforts to take over state institutions, which it views as a direct threat to Iran’s sovereignty and national security.
Iran has argued that the US remarks violate fundamental principles of international law, including provisions of the UN Charter that prohibit the use or threat of force and bar interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.
The letter warned that such rhetoric could worsen political instability and provoke violence, with potential implications for regional and international peace.
Tehran further alleged that the comments reflect a broader pattern of mounting pressure from Washington, citing repeated threats of force in recent weeks.
The communication also referred to earlier letters sent to the United Nations in late December 2025 and early January 2026, which, according to Iranian officials, highlighted similar concerns over sanctions, economic pressure and political messaging aimed at weakening the country.
