Pilgrimage to resume June–August; MEA outlines routes via Uttarakhand and Sikkim
New Delhi, May 1, 2026, BNN Web: China has announced that it will facilitate the travel of around 1,000 Indian pilgrims for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 2026, marking the resumption of the spiritually significant journey.
Chinese Embassy spokesperson Yu Jing welcomed the development, describing the pilgrimage as an important link between the two countries and expressing hope that it would strengthen cultural and people-to-people ties.
The annual Yatra, revered by Hindus as a journey to the abode of Lord Shiva and also significant for Jains and Buddhists, is scheduled to take place between June and August this year.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, a total of 20 batches of pilgrims will be allowed, with 10 groups travelling via Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and another 10 through Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. Each batch will consist of 50 yatris.
The MEA said applications are being accepted online through an official portal, and pilgrims will be selected through a computerised, random, and gender-balanced process.
The last date for registration has been set as May 19, 2026.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra remains one of the most sacred pilgrimages in the region, attracting devotees each year for its deep religious and cultural significance.
