Brussels, April 11, 2026, BNN Web Staff — The European Union has strongly criticized Israel’s approval of more than 30 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, calling the move unlawful and harmful to peace efforts in the region.

In an official statement issued on Friday, the EU said the expansion violates international law and undermines the possibility of achieving a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. It described the decision as a “serious setback” to long-standing international peace efforts.

The bloc further urged Israel to reverse its recent decisions and comply with its obligations under international law, including those related to the protection of civilians in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem. It also referenced a 2024 advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice declaring such actions unlawful.

The EU additionally condemned increasing violence by settlers against Palestinian civilians, reiterating its support for a peaceful resolution based on UN Security Council resolutions envisioning two states living side by side within secure and recognized borders.

Separately, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation also criticized Israel’s approval of 34 new settlements, echoing concerns that the move violates international law. Palestinian authorities termed the decision a “flagrant breach” of global legal norms. According to reports, the Israeli government has not yet issued an official response.

Peace Now, an Israeli rights group, said the approvals were made earlier this month, adding that dozens of settlements have been sanctioned since 2022.
