A Groundbreaking Move for Public Health

Many people have likely felt disappointment at seeing someone smoke in a beautiful, open-air location. Addressing this concern and a larger public health crisis, one country has now enacted a revolutionary new law, effectively banning smoking nationwide for a specific segment of its population. The Maldives has captured global headlines with its unprecedented generational tobacco ban.

Key Details of the Ban

The new regulation came into effect on November 1st. It explicitly prohibits the sale and use of tobacco products for individuals born on or after January 1, 2007. With this bold step, the Maldives has become the first country in the world to implement a generational, or “phase-out,” ban on cigarettes and other tobacco items.

Official Rationale from the Health Ministry

An official notification from the Maldivian Health Ministry states that the ban applies to the “purchase, use, or sale of tobacco products” for the designated generation. The decision was driven by the need to address serious health issues stemming from such lifestyle habits within the country. The primary goals are to:

  • Reduce the harm caused by tobacco use.
  • Cut down on escalating healthcare costs.
  • Safeguard the health of future generations.
  • Rules and Enforcement

Scope: The ban covers all types of tobacco products.

Age Verification: Retailers are legally obligated to verify a customer’s age by checking official identification documents before any sale. If there is any doubt about a person’s age, verification is mandatory.

Applicability: The law applies equally to Maldivian citizens and tourists visiting the island nation.

Penalties for Violation: The government has established strict penalties for non-compliance:

Selling tobacco products to a minor (a person born after 2007) will incur a fine of 50,000 Rufiyaa (approximately ₹284,000 or $3,400 USD).

Using vaping devices in prohibited areas carries a fine of 5,000 Rufiyaa (approximately ₹28,000 or $340 USD).

This landmark policy positions the Maldives at the forefront of global tobacco control efforts, aiming to create a smoke-free future for its younger generation.
