Gyeongju [South Korea] Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday as a “turning point” in bilateral relations, noting that sensitive issues such as foreign interference were discussed openly.

Speaking to reporters after the talks in Gyeongju, Carney said both sides had agreed to pursue a constructive path forward.

“We have now unlocked a path to address current issues,” he said. “Our overall discussion was positive and forward-looking.”

Carney confirmed that he had accepted Xi’s invitation to visit China early next year. “I have instructed our ministers and officials to coordinate efforts, find solutions to ongoing challenges, and explore new opportunities for cooperation and growth,” he added.

The remarks came amid ongoing trade tensions with the United States. Last week, US President Donald Trump announced a 10 percent increase in tariffs on Canadian imports and ended ongoing trade negotiations, following his criticism of an anti-tariff advertisement that featured the late President Ronald Reagan.

Carney said he had apologized to Trump over the controversy. “I did apologise to the president — he was offended by the ad,” Carney said, expressing hope that diplomatic communication would continue despite the current trade friction.
