PM Carney launches automatic tax filing for low-income Canadians, makes school food program permanent
Ontario (Canada), October 11, 2025:Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday announced two major social welfare initiatives ahead of the upcoming federal budget — the launch of an automatic tax filing system for low-income Canadians and the permanent implementation of the National School Food Program.
Speaking at a press conference in his home riding of Nepean, Ontario, Carney said the government’s focus remains on protecting vulnerable citizens and ensuring equitable access to essential services. He also confirmed the extension of the Canada Strong Pass through the 2026 holiday season and summer, aiming to continue support for families during key periods of financial strain.
“In this budget, we will have to make responsible and sometimes difficult choices,” Carney stated. “But our goal is clear — to preserve and strengthen programs that uplift those most in need and to build pathways that help Canadians get ahead.”
The automatic tax filing system, first introduced under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the 2020 Throne Speech and reaffirmed in the 2023 budget, is now set for phased implementation. The initiative aims to simplify the tax process and ensure that eligible low-income individuals automatically receive the benefits and credits they qualify for.
The move underscores Carney’s broader social policy agenda centered on affordability, inclusion, and long-term economic stability.
