Washington, D.C. [U.S.]:Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called the forthcoming Supreme Court hearing on tariffs “one of the most consequential cases in American history,” asserting that the outcome will have far-reaching implications for the nation’s economy and security. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in the case on November 5.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote that the court’s ruling would determine whether a president has the authority to impose tariffs. “If a President is not allowed to use Tariffs, the United States will be at a major disadvantage compared to other nations, particularly the major economies. We would, in essence, be defenceless,” he said.
Trump defended his previous use of tariffs, claiming they contributed significantly to America’s economic growth and national security during his administration. He said the stock market reached “record highs” during his tenure, accompanied by “virtually no inflation” and “unmatched national security.”
The former president also referenced trade negotiations with China and other nations, arguing that the power to impose tariffs helped the U.S. secure “fair and sustainable trade agreements.” Without that authority, he warned, the country would be “defenceless” and could face economic decline.
Trump attributed opposition to his trade policies to “foreign nations that have long exploited the U.S.” and domestic political rivals, including Democrats.
While Trump confirmed he would not personally attend the Supreme Court proceedings, he emphasized their importance, saying, “It will be one of the most critical decisions ever made by the United States Supreme Court. If we win, America will be the wealthiest and most secure country in the world. If we lose, we risk falling to near Third World levels. Pray that we don’t.”
According to a CNN report, the case centers on whether Trump’s administration had the legal right to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The former president used this authority to raise import tariffs — as high as 50% on countries like India and Brazil and up to 145% on China earlier this year.
While a ruling against Trump would not immediately revoke existing tariffs, analysts suggest it could significantly reshape his economic strategy and limit future presidential powers on trade.
