U.S. President Donald Trump has once again reignited controversy over the 2020 presidential election, calling for a formal Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into what he termed the “biggest scandal in American history.”
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump claimed the 2020 election was “rigged and stolen,” asserting that the country suffered after a “crooked moron” took office. He urged the DOJ to act decisively, warning that similar issues could affect upcoming elections if left unchecked.
Trump renewed his call to ban mail-in and early voting, advocating instead for strict voter ID requirements as a safeguard against potential fraud. He also criticised California’s Proposition 50, alleging it would manipulate congressional maps for political gain.
“The 2020 Presidential Election being rigged and stolen is a far bigger scandal. I hope the DOJ pursues this with full force — it’s the biggest in American history. If not, it will happen again,” Trump wrote, comparing the alleged irregularities to the NBA’s past gambling scandal.
The former president further claimed that California’s ongoing redistricting process was “totally dishonest,” accusing election officials of “shipping millions of ballots” into the state. “No mail-in or early voting — yes to voter ID! Get smart, Republicans, before it’s too late!” he added.
Proposition 50, set for a November 4 vote, seeks to replace maps drawn by California’s independent redistricting commission with new ones proposed by Democrats, potentially flipping several Republican-held congressional seats. Democrats argue that the measure is meant to balance out GOP-led gerrymandering efforts in other states.
Former President Barack Obama has expressed support for the ballot initiative. Meanwhile, the DOJ announced it will deploy election monitors across several California counties to ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law during the vote.
Trump, who returned to the White House after his 2024 victory, continues to maintain that the 2020 election was marred by large-scale irregularities—a claim repeatedly rejected by U.S. courts and election officials.
