Washington [DC], October 26, 2025: United States President Donald Trump on Sunday announced an additional 10% tariff on Canadian imports, accusing Canada of airing a “fraudulent” advertisement featuring former US President Ronald Reagan during the MLB World Series.
In a post on Truth Social from Air Force One, Trump wrote, “Ronald Reagan LOVED tariffs for purposes of national security and the economy, but Canada said he didn’t! Their advertisement was supposed to be taken down immediately, but they let it run again last night during the World Series, knowing it was a FRAUD. Because of this serious misrepresentation and hostile act, I am increasing the tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now.”
Currently, several Canadian goods already face heavy US tariffs — 35% on general products, 50% on steel and aluminium, and 10% on energy. Trump did not specify which categories would be affected by the new increase.
He also accused Canada of trying to use the US Supreme Court to overturn existing trade policies. “The sole purpose of this FRAUD was Canada’s hope that the Supreme Court will come to their rescue on tariffs they’ve used for years to hurt the United States,” Trump posted on X.
The move follows reports that Trump refused to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday before leaving for his Asia trip. Asked by reporters if he planned to hold talks with Carney during the visit, Trump replied, “No, I don’t have any plan to.”
The disputed advertisement, reportedly funded by the Ontario government at a cost of $75 million, uses a clip of Ronald Reagan that Canadian officials allegedly misrepresented as being anti-tariff. The ad has been running across major US networks.
