Washington DC [US], January 1, 2026, BNN Web Staff: US President Donald Trump on Thursday took aim at Hollywood actor George Clooney and his wife, international human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, after reports confirmed that the couple had acquired French citizenship.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump mocked the Clooneys, labelling them the “worst political prognosticators of all time,” and criticised their decision to become French citizens.

He also linked their move to his long-standing attacks on immigration policies in both the US and France.

Trump claimed that France is facing a serious crime problem due to what he described as poor immigration management, drawing comparisons with policies under former US President Joe Biden. He further criticised George Clooney’s political commentary, accusing the actor of seeking attention through politics and questioning his influence in the film industry.

Referring to Clooney’s past involvement in Democratic fundraising, Trump derided the actor’s support for Democratic leaders and mocked the party’s internal leadership battles, asserting that such figures would lead the Democrats to future electoral defeats.

Meanwhile, the French government confirmed on Wednesday that George and Amal Clooney were granted citizenship on the grounds of their contribution to France’s global cultural and international standing. The announcement was published in the Journal Officiel, which carries official government decrees, and included their twin children, Ella and Alexander.

However, the decision has sparked debate within France. Junior Interior Minister Marie-Pierre Vedrenne publicly questioned whether the couple may have received preferential treatment, noting that some citizens could perceive the process as unequal. George Clooney has previously joked that his command of the French language is “horrible.”

The Clooneys purchased a property in France in 2021, which George Clooney has described as their main residence. Under French law, non-citizens residing in the country can apply for naturalisation through several legal pathways.

It remains unclear whether George Clooney has retained his US citizenship. Amal Clooney, born in Lebanon and raised in the United Kingdom, reportedly acquired French citizenship under her maiden name, Amal Alamuddin. Their eight-year-old twins were born in London.
