Tensions rise as Tehran floats toll proposal for key global oil route; US signals firm opposition

Washington DC (US), April 11, 2026, BNN Web Staff — Donald Trump has made it clear that the United States will oppose any move by Iran to impose transit charges on ships passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, calling it an international waterway that must remain free for global navigation.

Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews before Vice President JD Vance departed, Trump dismissed the idea of allowing any toll system in the region. “We’re not going to allow that. It’s international water,” he said, adding that Washington would act if such measures were introduced.

The remarks follow Trump’s sharp criticism of Tehran a day earlier, after reports suggested Iranian authorities were considering levying fees on vessels crossing the narrow maritime corridor—a key artery for global oil shipments.

In posts on Truth Social, Trump accused Iran of attempting to use international waterways as leverage, suggesting the move was aimed at exerting short-term pressure on the global economy. He also took aim at Iran’s public messaging, claiming it was more effective in media handling than in military capability.

The controversy stems from comments by Ibrahim Azizi, head of Iran’s parliamentary National Security Commission, who indicated that a proposal under discussion could require ships to pay transit fees in Iran’s national currency, the rial. The plan is part of a broader framework focused on security and sustainable development in the Strait.

According to Iranian officials, the proposal may also include potential coordination with Oman, although they stressed that such arrangements would be secondary to the main policy objectives.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, handling a significant share of global oil trade. Any attempt to regulate or monetise passage through the corridor is likely to have far-reaching implications for international markets and shipping routes.

The developments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in West Asia, including a temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran, with further talks expected in the coming weeks.
