U.S. Govt shutdown disrupts Air Travel

The ongoing government shutdown in the United States is severely impacting the aviation sector. On Friday, November 7, hundreds of flights were canceled across the country.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is instructing airlines to gradually reduce flights at some of the nation’s busiest airports. The FAA’s order targets 40 airports across more than two dozen states for these flight reductions.

According to FlightAware, a website that tracks flight disruptions, over 800 flights were canceled nationwide. This figure is four times higher than the number of cancellations reported on Thursday. The airports experiencing the most significant disruptions include those in Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, and Phoenix.

The FAA has taken this step to mitigate a shortage of air traffic controllers. It is important to note that these controllers have been working without pay for over a month due to the government shutdown.
