Washington, D.C. – In a significant diplomatic move, the United States has granted Hungary a full exemption from sanctions prohibiting the purchase of oil and gas from Russia. The decision was announced following a meeting at the White House between President Donald Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a meeting characterized by mutual praise and a shared divergence from mainstream European policy.

During their talks, Prime Minister Orbán made his position on the Ukraine war clear, stating that defeating Russia would be “a miracle,” a stance that sets him apart from other European leaders. President Trump, in turn, praised Hungary’s strict immigration policy and suggested that the European Union should show Orbán more respect.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó hailed the exemption as a “guarantee for Hungary’s energy security.” President Trump justified the decision by noting Hungary’s geographical constraints, explaining that the landlocked country is dependent on pipeline supplies.

The meeting served as a symbolic victory for Orbán, who is facing economic challenges ahead of elections next year. It also recalled his earlier, unfulfilled offer to host a Trump-Putin summit in Budapest, which was subsequently canceled by the U.S. side.
