UAE Pledges $15 Million to UNHCR for Sudan Crisis at 2026 Global Appeal
Geneva, December 4, 2025 (BNN Web Staff)
The United Arab Emirates has announced a new $15 million contribution to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to bolster life-saving assistance for millions affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan and neighbouring host countries.
The pledge was made today at the annual UNHCR Pledging Conference for the 2026 Global Appeal, held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
Speaking at the event, Jamal Al Musharakh, UAE Permanent Representative to the United Nations and International Organisations in Geneva, reaffirmed the UAE’s unwavering solidarity with refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) worldwide:
“Refugees and IDPs are individuals with dignity and have the right to live in safety and hope. Predictable funding and equitable burden-sharing are essential to deliver humanitarian assistance in a safe, sustainable, and unimpeded manner.”
He highlighted the catastrophic scale of displacement driven by conflict, persecution, and climate shocks — particularly in Sudan, South Sudan, the Sahel, Myanmar, Ukraine, the Great Lakes region, and the Horn of Africa — and stressed the heightened risks faced by women, children, and other vulnerable groups.
The new $15 million will directly support UNHCR’s protection and assistance programmes for Sudanese refugees and IDPs, as well as strained host communities in neighbouring countries.
UAE: A Leading Donor to Sudan
Since the outbreak of Sudan’s civil war in April 2023, the UAE has emerged as one of the largest humanitarian donors to the crisis:
- Total aid since 2023: $784 million
- Currently the second-largest donor after the United States (UN OCHA)
- Cumulative assistance to Sudan (2015–2025): Over $4.24 billion
This latest pledge reinforces the UAE’s long-standing leadership in African humanitarian response and its commitment to stability, resilience, and sustainable development for the Sudanese people.
As global displacement reaches record levels — now exceeding 120 million people — the UAE continues to call for stronger international solidarity and shared responsibility to protect the world’s most vulnerable.
The UAE’s contribution sends a powerful message: even in the face of unprecedented crises, hope and humanity must prevail. 🇦🇪
