UK Government Set to Overhaul Asylum System, Proposes 20-Year Wait for Permanent Settlement

UK- In a significant move to address public concerns over immigration, the UK government is planning major reforms to its asylum system and is poised to announce that individuals granted asylum will have to wait for at least 20 years before they can apply for permanent settlement in the country, according to a BBC report.

The initiative, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government, aims to quell rising anxieties about immigration levels. As reported by The Guardian, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood plans to reform asylum policy and amend laws that currently guarantee housing and financial support to asylum seekers.

This legislative overhaul is part of the British government’s broader strategy to reduce small boat crossings across the English Channel and lower the record number of asylum claims.
