London (UK), December 1, 2025-BNN Web Staff: Labour MP Tulip Siddiq has been handed a two-year prison sentence by a court in Bangladesh after being tried in absentia on corruption-related charges involving 16 others.
Prosecutors alleged that Siddiq used her influence over her aunt — former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina — to secure a plot of land for her family on the outskirts of Dhaka. Siddiq, who lives in London, has dismissed the accusations as false and politically motivated. She is not expected to serve the sentence.
The case is one of several launched against Hasina, her associates, and family members following the fall of her government. Siddiq stepped down as a Treasury minister earlier this year amid scrutiny of her family ties.
Court documents claim Siddiq pressured Hasina to obtain land for her mother, sister, and brother. Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission argued she was tried as a Bangladeshi citizen, citing possession of a passport, national ID, and tax records — assertions her legal team disputes. They maintain she has not held Bangladeshi identification documents in adulthood.
Judge Rabiul Alam sentenced Siddiq to two years in jail and fined her 100,000 Bangladeshi Taka (£620). Failure to pay would add six more months to the sentence.
When proceedings began, Siddiq said the allegations were “false” and intended to damage her reputation. She has not issued a statement since the verdict.
