London [UK]:
At least 10 people were injured, nine of them critically, in a stabbing spree aboard a train in Cambridgeshire, East England, on Saturday evening, British Transport Police (BTP) reported.
The incident, which occurred on the 6:25 PM service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross, prompted a major emergency response and the involvement of Counter Terrorism Policing units.
“Ten people have been taken to hospital following a multiple stabbing on a train in Cambridgeshire. Nine are believed to have life-threatening injuries. A major incident has been declared, and Counter Terrorism Policing are supporting our investigation,” the BTP said in a statement on X.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after the train was halted at Huntingdon station. Two suspects have been taken into custody, police confirmed.
BTP Chief Superintendent Chris Casey described the event as “shocking,” extending his thoughts to the victims and their families.
“We are conducting urgent inquiries to determine what has taken place, but it may take time before further details are confirmed. At this stage, it would be inappropriate to speculate on the motive,” Casey said.
He added that police activity continues in the area, with cordons and road closures in place. Train services through Huntingdon have been suspended until further notice.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack “appalling,” expressing concern and gratitude to emergency responders.
“The incident near Huntingdon is deeply worrying. My thoughts are with everyone affected, and I thank the emergency services for their swift response,” Starmer posted on X.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also reacted to the event, saying she was “deeply saddened” and is being briefed regularly on the investigation.
“Two suspects have been arrested and remain in custody. I urge the public to refrain from speculation as the investigation proceeds,” she stated.
