UK to introduce ‘Fake News’ classes

As the use of fake news continues to grow worldwide, many people are falling prey to its influence. In response, the United Kingdom is preparing to take action by implementing a major change to its school system. From 2028, a new national curriculum will teach children what fake news is and how to identify it, equipping them with the skills to distinguish fact from fiction.

A ‘Plan for Change’

This initiative is part of the British government’s ‘Plan for Change,’ which focuses on preparing children for the challenges of the digital age. The new curriculum will educate students on subjects including Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital responsibility, and civic understanding.

Learning from the World, Not Just Books

Education Minister Bridget Phillipson emphasized the need for this shift, stating that it is time for children “to learn not just from books but from the world so they can tell the difference between fact and fiction.”

Other key reforms will include a compulsory citizenship module covering climate education, a new language qualification, and a greater emphasis on outdoor and sporting activities.

Reducing Exam Pressure

In a move aimed at creating a more balanced education system, the pressure of exams on teenage students will be reduced by up to 10%, following a recommendation from the UK’s curriculum review committee.

Focus on Misinformation and Financial Management

In primary schools, children will receive training to identify ‘misinformation’ and ‘disinformation’. Additionally, lessons on money management, debt, and responsible digital behavior will be incorporated into the curriculum.
