US Air Travel: The ongoing US government shutdown, now in its 27th day, has severely crippled the nation’s air travel system. On Monday, over 4,000 flights were delayed and approximately 118 were cancelled, causing significant disruption for passengers. This follows a Sunday that saw more than 8,700 delayed flights, according to reports.

The crisis is driven by critical staffing shortages at airports and air traffic control towers. Nearly 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers are currently working without pay, placing immense strain on the entire aviation system.

Key Impacts and Official Warnings

Widespread Disruptions: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported significant flight impacts in southeastern states and at Newark Liberty International Airport (New Jersey). At Los Angeles International Airport, flights were held on the runway for an average of 25 minutes.

Staff Under Pressure: US Transportation Secretary Shawn Duffy highlighted the human toll, stating, “Thousands of employees are under mental and economic pressure. Many officers live paycheck to paycheck. They are now worried about affording fuel and childcare.”

No Quick Fix: The Department of Transportation has warned that flight delays and cancellations will continue until the political impasse is resolved. Airlines are advising passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport and to prepare for long wait times.

Experts caution that even after the shutdown ends, it could take several days or weeks for operations to normalize, as staffing shortages and operational disruptions have profoundly impacted the air traffic system.
