New Delhi, May 25, 2026, BNN Web Staff — US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed racist remarks targeting Indians in the United States as the actions of “stupid people,” stressing that such comments do not represent American society as a whole.

Speaking during a press interaction in New Delhi, Rubio clarified earlier remarks he made regarding racism against Indians in the US, saying he was largely referring to offensive content circulating online.

According to him, many such posts could even originate from trolls or automated bot accounts.

“People say stupid stuff all the time on social media and in every country in the world,” Rubio said, while underlining that hateful online behaviour is unfortunately a global issue rather than one limited to a specific nation.

The US Secretary of State also reaffirmed that the United States remains a welcoming country for immigrants and international communities, including Indians. He said isolated racist comments should not be viewed as a reflection of America’s broader values.

Highlighting ties between Washington and New Delhi, Rubio said the American leadership deeply values its relationship with India. He added that the US President shares a strong rapport with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and described India as a major democratic and strategic partner.

Rubio further praised India’s global importance, calling it the world’s most populous democracy and a crucial ally of the United States.

During the interaction, Rubio was also asked whether India had raised concerns about Pakistan’s role as a mediator in the US-Iran conflict. Responding to the query, he said the issue did not arise during discussions. However, he acknowledged that India has consistently expressed concerns over terrorist groups operating from Pakistani territory.

The remarks came during Rubio’s visit to India, where he held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on bilateral and regional issues.
