Venezuela emphasized that the United States has no legal authority to close another nation’s airspace, labeling Trump’s statement as a “colonialist threat.”
Venezuela, November 30, 2025, BNN Web Staff: Venezuela strongly condemned former US President Donald Trump’s recent statement suggesting that the airspace surrounding the country should be considered closed.
The Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs described Trump’s comments as “another extravagant, illegal, and unjustified act of aggression against the Venezuelan people.”
Venezuela emphasized that the United States has no legal authority to close another nation’s airspace, labeling Trump’s statement as a “colonialist threat.”
The US has increased its military presence in the region and conducted at least 21 operations targeting boats allegedly involved in drug trafficking, resulting in over 80 deaths.
President Nicolás Maduro has rejected these claims, asserting that Washington’s actions are intended to undermine his government.
On the social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: “To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY.” The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The statement has drawn criticism from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers in the US Congress, who argue that Trump bypassed constitutional authority.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer warned that such unilateral actions could push the United States toward another costly foreign conflict, reminding that under the US Constitution, Congress holds the exclusive power to declare war.
