WASHINGTON D.C. – In a significant strategic move, the United States has approved the sale of advanced F-35 stealth fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. The announcement was made by President Donald Trump just ahead of the White House visit by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

A Long-Awaited Deal for Riyadh

This potential deal marks a major milestone for Saudi Arabia, which has been seeking to acquire the F-35 from the US for many years. Until now, Israel has been the only country in the Middle East in possession of these advanced fighter jets, which are capable of evading enemy radar and executing covert strike missions.

Israel’s Stance: Balancing Concerns with Diplomacy

The proposed sale has drawn a complex reaction from Israel, a key US ally. Israeli security establishments have expressed significant concern over the transfer of such advanced technology to a regional power.

Despite Israel’s own ongoing efforts to normalize relations with Saudi Arabia, it has formally raised objections to the deal. The Israeli Air Force has reportedly submitted an official letter of protest to its government. A primary fear is that F-35s stationed at Saudi western bases could reach Israeli airspace within minutes.

As a result, Israel is expected to demand that if the sale proceeds, the jets should not be deployed at airbases in western Saudi Arabia. Israeli officials have also reportedly communicated to the Trump administration that the F-35 deal should be contingent upon Saudi Arabia taking concrete steps to normalize its diplomatic relations with Israel.

The F-35 Lightning II: A Technological Marvel

The F-35 is not an ordinary fighter jet. It is counted among the world’s most advanced and high-tech aircraft.

  • Manufacturer: Lockheed Martin (USA)
  • Key Feature: Stealth capability, making it extremely difficult for enemy radar to detect.
  • Top Speed: Mach 1.6 (approximately 1,200 mph / 1,930 km/h)
  • Systems: Boasts some of the world’s most advanced targeting, sensor, and radar systems.
  • Unit Cost: Approximately $100 million.

The approval of this sale has undoubtedly introduced a new dynamic into the complex geopolitics of the Middle East, balancing strategic partnerships with regional security concerns.
